How Swipe Clean Photos Cleans Up Your iPhone 100% On-Device
Scans, video compression and contact matching all run on the iPhone, with no account and no analytics SDKs. The app keeps small local records (scan fingerprints, decisions, stats, the vault) on the device. Airplane mode is an easy check.
The problem
A cleaner app asks for access to everything: every photo, every video, every contact. Many “optimise your phone” apps process in the cloud, add analytics and tracking, and make money from your data. It’s hard to tell which kind you’ve installed.
What stays on the device
- The photo scan: exact duplicates are compared by content fingerprints, similar photos by small visual fingerprints, screenshots by an iOS flag.
- Video compression: done with the system’s video encoder on the phone.
- Contact matching: done locally; nothing is uploaded.
- The vault: encrypted on-device with a key that never leaves this iPhone.
- No account, no cloud sync.
What the app does store
To be useful over time it keeps a few things locally:
- Photo fingerprints (so a rescan is fast)
- Which photos you swiped keep (so it doesn’t ask again; expires after a year)
- Your cleaning stats: space freed, streak and companion level
- The vault files, if you use it
You can wipe the kept-photo memory in Settings → Reset Review History.
How to check for yourself
- Turn on airplane mode.
- Run a scan and review some photos.
- Merge a contact.
It all works. That’s the simplest proof that nothing needed a connection.
What you still need to do
- Deleting is real. Photos go to Recently Deleted for 30 days; empty it to reclaim the space.
- If you use iCloud Photos, deleting on this phone deletes everywhere.
