How to Free Up Storage on a Full iPhone Fast
Scan once, clear screenshots, exact duplicates and burst shots first, shrink or remove your biggest videos, then empty Recently Deleted, because deleted photos keep using space for up to 30 days. The free plan lets you delete up to 50 MB in one cleanup per day.
The problem
“Storage Almost Full” always appears at the worst moment: when you’re about to take a photo, update iOS or download something you need today. You have five minutes, and Settings → Storage tells you that “Photos” takes 40 GB but not what in there is safe to remove. Scrolling the camera roll to find junk by eye is hopeless with 20,000 pictures.
The space is usually hidden in a few predictable places, so the trick is cleaning them in the right order.
The order that works
- Scan. Open Swipe Clean Photos and tap Scan My Photos. It looks for exact duplicates, near-identical shots and screenshots in your library, on the device. The Home screen then shows how much is “ready to clean”.
- Screenshots first. Receipts, maps, chats and tickets pile up and are rarely needed once you’ve used them. Screenshots start unselected, so you choose what goes.
- Exact duplicates. Byte-identical copies are the safest deletions. The app keeps the best version and offers the rest.
- Burst and retake shots (the “Similar” group): keep one, remove the rest.
- Biggest videos. One long 4K video can outweigh thousands of photos. Under More tools → Videos, sort by size. Compress it (Premium) or delete it. See compressing videos.
- Empty Recently Deleted. This is the step people miss. See why deleted photos still use space.
Swipe or select
By default you review one photo at a time: swipe left to delete, right to keep. If you have hundreds, switch to the grid (“expert mode”) and select in bulk. See how swipe cleaning works.
What the free plan lets you do
Scanning and reviewing are free. Deleting is limited to one cleanup a day, up to 50 MB; if your selection is bigger than that, the app asks you to upgrade rather than deleting part of it. Select under 50 MB to stay in the free limit, or see free vs. Premium.
Mistakes to avoid
- Deleting first and checking the storage bar immediately. It won’t have moved.
- Using “select all” on Similar photos without looking. The app picks a suggested keeper (highest resolution, then largest file), but only you know which shot is the good one.
- Starting with the contacts or widgets. They don’t free meaningful space.
FAQ
What should I delete first? Screenshots, exact duplicates and near-identical burst shots are the safest wins. Then look at your largest videos, which usually outweigh thousands of photos.
Why did my storage not change after I deleted photos? iOS keeps deleted photos in Recently Deleted for 30 days and they still use space until that album is emptied. See the guide on Recently Deleted.
How much can I delete for free? One cleanup per day of up to 50 MB. Premium removes that limit.
Does it upload my photos to scan them? No. Scans run on your iPhone.
