How to Find and Delete Duplicate Photos on iPhone

TL;DR

Swipe Clean Photos finds exact duplicates by comparing size and then a content fingerprint (SHA-256), keeps the highest-resolution copy as the suggested keeper and lets you review before deleting. It finds identical files only; resized or re-compressed copies are a different problem.

The problem

Photos get duplicated without you doing anything. You save an image from a message and then again from a shared album. A backup or an import restores things twice. Each copy takes the same space, and Apple’s own Duplicates album only shows what iOS is sure about.

Finding them by eye is impractical, and deleting the wrong copy of a photo you care about is a real worry.

How the scan decides

  1. Cheap pre-check: it groups photos with the same pixel dimensions and file size.
  2. Confirmation: within those groups it computes a content fingerprint (SHA-256). Only photos whose fingerprints match are called duplicates.

That means “duplicate” here is strict: identical content, not just similar-looking. It won’t flag two different photos of the same scene.

What to do

  1. Open Swipe Clean Photos and run the scan (Scan My Photos).
  2. In swipe mode, duplicates appear in the deck with a Keeping thumbnail showing which copy would stay. Or switch to the grid and open the Duplicates tab.
  3. Check a couple of groups at full size using the preview.
  4. Swipe left (or select) the copies you don’t need. The suggested keeper is the highest-resolution photo, then the largest file.
  5. Commit the deletion and approve the iOS prompt.
  6. Empty Recently Deleted to actually get the space back. See that guide.

What it won’t find

  • Re-compressed or resized copies (for example, the same picture received through a chat app).
  • Edited versions of a photo.
  • Near-identical shots such as burst frames. Those are in the Similar group, covered in similar photos and screenshots.

Safety

  • Nothing is deleted until you confirm, and iOS asks again.
  • Deleted photos stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days.
  • Everything runs on the device.

FAQ

What counts as an exact duplicate? Two photos with the same dimensions and file size whose contents are identical byte for byte (confirmed with a SHA-256 fingerprint).

Which copy is kept? The app suggests keeping the highest-resolution one, then the largest file. You can change that.

Why didn’t it find the photo I saved twice from a chat app? Chat apps often re-compress. A re-compressed copy is not byte-identical, so it isn’t an exact duplicate. See the guide on why duplicates are missed.

Is anything uploaded? No. The scan runs on your iPhone.
