How to Compress Large Videos to Free Up Space on iPhone
Video compression is a Premium feature. Pick Light (original resolution), Standard (1080p) or Strong (720p), compress on-device and keep the app open. The compressed copy is added to your library; the space only comes back once you delete the original.
The problem
You’ve deleted all the photos you could stomach losing and the phone is still full. The real weight is video: a few minutes of 4K can take several gigabytes, more than thousands of photos. Deleting a family video to make space feels terrible. Compressing it with an online tool means uploading private footage and waiting.
What the app does
Swipe Clean lists your videos biggest first, with resolution and duration. For each you can choose a compression level, and the app shows an estimated size before you start:
| Level | What it does | Rough size left |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Original resolution, re-encoded as HEVC | about 75% |
| Standard | Exports at 1080p | about 45% |
| Strong | Exports at 720p, the biggest saving | about 25% |
These numbers are estimates; the real result depends on the video.
How to do it
- Go to More tools → Videos.
- Pick a large video. Choose a level and check the estimate.
- Tap Compress Video. Keep the app open while it transcodes.
- When it’s done, you’ll see how much was saved. The compressed copy is saved to your library.
- Check that the copy looks and plays right.
- Choose whether to delete the original (or Keep Both). iOS asks for confirmation, and the original goes to Recently Deleted for 30 days.
There’s also a batch flow if you want to compress several at once, and a swipe mode for deciding video by video.
The part everyone misses
Compressing makes a new, smaller video. Until the original is gone, you’ve used more space, not less. And once you delete it, the space only returns when Recently Deleted is emptied. See that guide.
When to use which
- Light for videos you want to keep looking their best.
- Standard for most everyday clips.
- Strong for old videos you only keep for the memory.
Free vs. Premium
Compression needs Premium. Deleting videos uses the same free daily limit as photos (one cleanup, up to 50 MB). See free vs. Premium.
