SpeedTrace
Track speed, distance, and routes for driving, cycling, and more.
SpeedTrace turns your iPhone into a glanceable GPS speedometer and trip recorder. Driving, cycling, running or sailing, see your real speed in big, high-contrast digits, watch your route draw itself on the map, and keep a history of everywhere you have been.
If you don’t share, it doesn’t go online. No ads, no analytics, no tracking: your trips, routes and speed history stay on your device and in your own iCloud. The one feature that uses our server is live location sharing, which you start yourself, one share at a time.
Key Features
Big, Glanceable Speedometer
- Large readout in km/h, mph, knots or m/s; live altitude, compass heading, session max and average
- Honest GPS status (Acquiring, Good, Weak): it never fakes a confident reading on a weak signal
- Twelve speedometer faces; Classic is free forever, and you can try any locked face for 30 seconds on the road
- The app is coloured by the sky outside, worked out from the sun’s angle where you are
Trips & History
- One tap to record; keeps going with the screen off (Background Tracking, needs Always location)
- Optional automatic recording: driving starts a trip, parking ends it (off by default)
- Every trip saved with distance, duration, max and average speed and climb; speed and elevation charts
- Postcard share cards of your route; export as GPX or CSV
- Unlimited history, synced through your private iCloud
Speed Limit & Alerts (Optional)
- Posted limit for the road you are on, from OpenStreetMap; coverage varies, and where none is published SpeedTrace says so
- Spoken and vibration alerts when you go over
- Leave it off and the app makes no network requests of its own
Live Location Sharing (Pro)
- Send someone a link and they watch you drive in a browser: your position, your speed if you choose, and your ETA
- They install nothing and need no account; anyone holding the link can watch, so send it only to people you want watching
- Choose how long: 15 minutes, an hour, 8 hours, or until you arrive; stop it at any moment from the banner or the Lock Screen
- Viewers see the last ten minutes of your route, never where you set off from
- When a share ends, the route it was showing is deleted from our server
- Sharing needs a free account (Sign in with Apple or an e-mail code). Nothing else in the app does
Live Activity
- Live speed on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island while you record
- While a share is running, remaining time and how many people are watching
Pro Extras
- HUD mode: a mirrored, full-brightness readout for the windshield at night, green when clear and red over the limit
- 0-100 km/h / 0-60 mph acceleration timing, with interpolated timing (GPS updates about once a second, so it is an estimate, not a drag strip)
- Dial colours and alternate app icons
Free & Pro
- Free: the Classic dial, all four units, live map, unlimited trip history and charts, GPX/CSV export, speed limit alerts, automatic recording, share cards and Live Activity. Plus a 2-minute preview share, to see what the other person sees
- Individual dials: buy any dial on its own (except Horizon)
- Pro: live location sharing at full length, every dial including Horizon and all future ones, HUD mode, 0-100 timing, dial colours and alternate icons. Weekly, yearly, or once and for good
- Already bought Pro? You keep everything you paid for and live location sharing is included, at no further cost
Note: Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. SpeedTrace only uses background location while you are actively recording a trip. The speedometer is an aid, not a certified instrument.
