How to Remove GPS Location From a Photo Before Sharing
Every copy PrivShot saves is re-encoded without its GPS location and other metadata. Share the PrivShot copy, not the original. Visible clues in the picture (signs, landmarks) are not metadata and still reveal where you were.
The problem
By default, your iPhone writes the coordinates of where you were, and when, into every photo you take. Most people have no idea. Post the original to a forum, a marketplace listing or send it by email, and the file may carry your home address, your child’s school, your workplace, or last night’s exact location.
Some apps strip this on upload and some don’t, and you can’t easily tell which. Turning off location for the camera also turns off geotagging you might want.
What PrivShot does
Every image PrivShot saves is re-encoded from the pixels into a fresh JPEG. Only the picture (with the right orientation) is carried over. The GPS location, timestamps, device model and other metadata aren’t copied across.
You don’t switch it on: it happens on every save, for photos you take in PrivShot and photos you import. The editor even shows a “Location stripped” note while you work.
How to do it
- Open PrivShot and import the photo (or take one in the app).
- Review it. You can leave everything unticked if you only want the location removed, but check the categories you’d expect.
- Save it (for imports, Save all to library), then share the saved copy from your library or the Recent tab.
Share the right file
PrivShot makes a new copy. Your original is still in the library with its metadata. If you share that one instead, nothing has been stripped. Delete the original only if you no longer need it.
Metadata is only half the story
A clean file can still give you away:
- A street sign, shop name or landmark in the background
- A distinctive view from your window
- A number plate or house number
- Reflections
Combine stripping with blurring or brushing those details. See manual blur.
No connection needed
The whole thing runs on your phone, so you can do it in airplane mode.
FAQ
Does PrivShot always strip location? Yes. Every saved copy is rebuilt as a clean JPEG without the GPS dictionary and other metadata. There is no checkbox to forget.
Does it remove the metadata from my original? No. Your original stays in your library with its metadata. Share the PrivShot copy.
What else gets removed? The copy is re-encoded keeping only the picture (with the correct orientation). Timestamps, device model and other EXIF fields are not carried over.
Can people still tell where it was taken? Possibly, from what is visible: street signs, landmarks, shop fronts, a distinctive view. Metadata is only part of it.
