How to Blur Faces in a Photo Automatically on iPhone
Take or import a photo and PrivShot finds the faces (including small, distant ones), then you review, add anything missed and save a copy. It runs on-device with no account. Check the review screen: no detector catches everything.
The problem
You took a good photo, but someone’s face is in it: a stranger in the background of a street shot, another parent at a school event, a colleague in a group picture. You want to post it, or send it to a group chat, and you don’t want to expose people who never agreed to be there.
The usual fixes are poor. Drawing blur boxes by hand is slow, and the small face at the edge of the frame is exactly the one you miss. Online “anonymise photo” tools do it for you, but only after you upload the original, which means the un-blurred photo leaves your phone to protect privacy.
What PrivShot does about it
PrivShot finds faces and covers them on the phone itself, then lets you check the work before anything is saved.
- Detection scans the photo in tiles at its native resolution, so small and distant faces in a group or street shot are much more likely to be found than with a single pass.
- Blur is generous: each region is padded outward and feathered at the edge, so a turned head or a partial profile still gets covered.
- You review before saving. A review screen shows what was found, grouped by category. You can switch a category off, or a single detection.
- The original isn’t written to disk. It stays in memory while you review. Only the blurred copy is saved.
How to do it
- Open PrivShot and choose Take a photo or Import from library.
- Wait for the scan. With Take a photo the review screen opens straight away. With Import, the photo appears as a tile with a count of what was blurred; tap it to open the review screen. Detected regions are already covered.
- Look at every face in the picture. Pinch to zoom in on the background.
- Use the category chips to switch categories on or off. Tap a chip’s label to open the list of individual detections and tick or untick each one.
- Missed someone? Switch to Manual and paint over them with the brush or a rectangle. See manual blur.
- Tap Save. For a photo you took, that saves it to your library; for imports, tap Save all to library back on the grid. The saved copy has its location data removed.
Choose the look
Faces use your default style from Settings: Mosaic or Blur, at Light, Medium or Strong. The default is Mosaic at Medium. For people who must not be recognisable, use Strong. See Mosaic vs. blur.
What to watch for
- It’s a safety net, not a guarantee. Faces turned away, partly hidden, very small, in heavy shadow or at odd angles can be missed. Do a final check of the whole frame before you post.
- Reflections. A face in a window or a mirror may not be detected.
- Save = final. Keep your original in the library if you might need it later. The saved PrivShot copy can’t be un-blurred.
- Free version: one photo at a time and a small PrivShot watermark. See Free vs. Pro.
FAQ
Does it blur small faces in the background? It scans the photo in tiles at full resolution specifically to catch small and distant faces. Still, check the review screen, because no detector catches everything.
Is the photo uploaded to blur it? No. Detection and blurring both run on your iPhone. There is no account and no server.
Does the original get saved? No. The un-blurred photo is held in memory while you review and only the blurred result is written when you save.
Can I un-blur something after saving? No. Once a saved copy is blurred, the blur is baked into the pixels. Keep the original photo in your library if you may need it.
