How PrivShot Blurs Photos Without Uploading Them Anywhere
Detection and blurring run on your iPhone using Apple frameworks. The un-blurred image is held in memory only and never saved. Only blurred copies are written, and a Recent list keeps them in the app until you delete them. No account, no upload.
The problem
A privacy tool that sends your private photo to a server is a contradiction. The whole point is to stop a face, an ID or a screenshot from circulating. But many “blur” and “anonymise” apps work by uploading the original, processing it in the cloud and sending it back. For that second, an un-blurred copy exists on a server you know nothing about, behind an account, under policies you didn’t read.
You can’t tell from the outside, and most people never check.
How PrivShot is built
- On-device detection. Faces, text, and card/document shapes are found by Apple’s frameworks running locally.
- In-memory original. While you review, the un-blurred image lives in memory, so the review screen can re-render when you tick a category on or off. It is not written to storage.
- Only blurred pixels are saved. When you tap Save, the copy is built from the blurred result with metadata removed.
- No account, no analytics, no ads.
- No server. There’s nothing to upload to.
What gets stored
- The blurred copy, saved to your Photos library when you save.
- A copy in the app’s Recent tab, so you can find your redacted photos again. They stay on the device, and you can delete any of them (or select several and delete).
How to check for yourself
- Turn on airplane mode.
- Import a photo and run the scan.
- Save it.
It all works. That’s the simplest evidence that nothing needed a connection.
What on-device does not mean
- It doesn’t mean detection is perfect. See what it detects and what it misses.
- It doesn’t protect the file after you share it. Once a blurred copy leaves your phone, treat it as public.
- It doesn’t delete your original. Your original stays in your library until you delete it.
One habit
Always share the PrivShot copy, never the original.
