How to Choose Aspect Ratio and Photo Format in GeoCam
Choose the aspect ratio for where the photo is going and the file format for where it will be used. HEIC is small, JPEG is compatible everywhere, PNG is lossless but large. The stamp is applied at every setting, so shoot at the final ratio.
The problem
Two small decisions cause a lot of regret.
Ratio. You shoot at the full frame, then crop to a square for a post and the date and place, sitting in a corner, get cut off. Because the stamp is burned in, the only fix is to retake the photo, and you can’t retake a moment.
Format. You upload a photo to a form or a client portal and it’s rejected because it’s HEIC. Or you shoot everything lossless and your phone fills up.
How to choose
Aspect ratio
Pick the shape of the final use, then shoot to it:
- Square or portrait for social posts and thumbnails.
- Full frame / widest for documentation, where you want maximum detail around the subject.
- Stick to one ratio for a whole job so photos line up in a report.
File format
GeoCam can save HEIC, JPEG or PNG.
| Format | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG | Uploading anywhere, emailing, forms | Slightly larger than HEIC |
| HEIC | Saving space on iPhone | Some sites and Windows tools reject it |
| PNG | Lossless quality | Big files |
How to do it
- Open the camera settings before you start the shoot, not in the middle.
- Choose the ratio you’ll use.
- Choose the format your destination accepts. If you aren’t sure, JPEG.
- Take a test shot and check the stamp isn’t touching an edge.
Good habits
- Decide ratio and format once per job and note them in the template name.
- If a client specifies a format or size, follow it exactly. It saves rework.
- Keep your template’s stamp away from edges. See customising.
FAQ
Can I set the aspect ratio before I shoot? Yes. Pick it in the camera so the frame matches where the photo is going.
Which format should I use? JPEG if the photo has to open anywhere or be uploaded to a form; HEIC for smaller files on Apple devices; PNG when you need lossless quality.
Does the stamp still apply at every ratio? Yes. The overlay is applied whatever ratio and format you choose.
Why shouldn’t I crop later? The stamp is part of the image. Cropping to a different ratio afterwards can cut part of it off.
