How to Wake Up to a Radio Station with RadioX Alarms (and What Really Happens)

TL;DR

Create an alarm with a time, repeat days, a station and an optional stop-after. When it rings, tap Listen and the station starts. If the stream can't start, a fallback tone plays instead of silence. Free allows one alarm; Pro allows unlimited.

The problem

You want to wake to a real radio station instead of a beep. Apps that promise this often fail silently: the phone is locked, the app was closed, the stream didn’t connect, and you oversleep. An alarm you can’t trust is worse than none.

How it works

RadioX schedules a real system alarm for each alarm you create:

  • iOS 26 and later: an AlarmKit alarm. The system owns the ring, so it breaks through silent mode and Focus, survives the app being closed, and shows on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island.
  • iOS 18 to 25: a time-sensitive local notification with a bundled sound and a Listen action. It follows silent mode and Focus, and there is no Lock Screen alarm display.

In both cases the ring is a bundled sound, because iOS can’t start an internet stream while the app isn’t running. Tap Listen, and the app opens and starts your station.

If the stream does not start within a short time, a fallback tone plays and a clear error appears, so a dead stream never turns into a silent morning.

Set one up

  1. Settings → Playback → Alarms.
  2. Tap Add Alarm. The first time, allow alarms when asked. If it is denied, the screen explains that alarms will not sound and links to Settings.
  3. Choose the time, repeat days (none means once, at the next occurrence), the station and Stop after (never, or 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 minutes).
  4. Save and leave the toggle on.

Free vs Pro

Free: one alarm. Pro: unlimited. Alarms are stored only on the device that set them. They don’t sync, so your other devices won’t ring too.

Tips

  • Pick a station that’s reliable at 6 a.m.; test it the night before.
  • Keep the phone’s volume at a level that wakes you; the alarm sound follows system alarm volume.
  • No ads appear when the app is opened from an alarm.

FAQ

Does the station start by itself at alarm time? No. iOS does not let an app start a stream by itself in the background. The alarm rings with a bundled sound, then the station starts as soon as you tap Listen.

What if the stream is down? A watchdog plays a fallback tone and shows an error rather than leaving you in silence.

Will it ring in silent mode? On iOS 26 and later the system alarm breaks through silent mode and Focus. On iOS 18–25 it is a time-sensitive notification and follows silent mode and Focus.

How many alarms are free? One. RadioX Pro unlocks unlimited alarms.
