Custom Ringtone Not Showing or Not Working on iPhone? Fix It

TL;DR

Most failures come from length (30 s for the share sheet, 40 s for sync), the wrong route for your iOS version, choosing Text Tone instead of Ringtone, or an unexpected file type. Re-export under the limit and set it up again.

The problem

You exported the file but your ringtone list doesn’t show it, or the system rejects it, or it rings so quietly you miss calls.

Check in this order

  1. Length. Under 30 s for iOS 26’s share sheet; up to 40 s for Mac sync. The editor shows a notice if the project is too long.
  2. Route. Share sheet needs iOS 26+. On earlier versions use GarageBand or Mac sync.
  3. File. For Finder sync, the file must be AAC with an .m4r extension. Duplicate and rename the exported M4A.
  4. Where you set it. Ringtones are in Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone (top of the list under “Ringtones”). Check you didn’t choose Text Tone.
  5. GarageBand. Open the generated project, then use My Songs → long-press → Share → Ringtone.
  6. Volume. Raise the clip volume or add EQ (Pro) and test on the phone speaker with the ringer up.
  7. Silent switch / Focus. Your phone won’t ring in silent mode or a Focus that blocks the contact.

Still stuck

Export again at a shorter length with a simple single track, and follow one route start to finish. Email [email protected] with your iOS version and the route you tried.

FAQ

“Use as Ringtone” isn’t in the share sheet. It exists on iOS 26 and later and needs audio shorter than 30 seconds. Otherwise use GarageBand or Mac sync.

Export says my project is too long. Trim the total to 40 seconds or less (under 30 for the share sheet).

My tone appears under Text Tone. You set it in the wrong place. Use Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone.

It plays too quietly. Raise the clip volume before export and test through the phone speaker.
