How to Make a Transparent PNG Cutout for Stickers, Logos and Designs
After a cutout, export as PNG to keep transparency; JPEG can't be transparent. PhotoRepair's default Auto format picks PNG when the image has transparency and JPEG otherwise. Check edges at zoom before exporting.
The problem
You drop a cutout into a design and a white box appears around it. JPEGs can’t be transparent. Or you export a PNG and the edges have a faint halo of the old background. Both are fixable, but only if you know the cause.
How to get a clean transparent PNG
- Make the cutout with Cutout.
- Choose HD · Hair for people and animals, and an edge style that suits the subject.
- Zoom in on the edges and fix leftovers with a tap.
- Check the export format in Settings: Auto (PNG when there’s transparency, JPEG otherwise), PNG (always lossless, larger) or JPEG (smaller, flattens transparency).
- Save to Photos or share.
Why it works
A PNG carries an alpha channel, so the subject sits cleanly over any colour or scene. JPEG throws that away.
Tips
- Sharp edges for products and logos; soft for portraits.
- Preview on a dark and light background to spot halos.
- Keep a PNG master and make JPEG copies where needed.
- File size: PNGs of big photos are large. That’s expected.

FAQ
Why is there a white box around my cutout? You exported as JPEG, which has no transparency. Use PNG, or Auto, which picks PNG for transparent images.
Where do I set the format? In Settings, the export format can be Auto, PNG or JPEG.
