How to Remove GPS Location from a Photo Before Sharing (Hide Location)
Hide Location copies the image losslessly and excludes the GPS dictionary, leaving pixels, orientation, colour profile and other metadata intact. It removes location only; other metadata such as camera and date stays. It is free.
The problem
An iPhone photo records exactly where you took it. Post the original and you may be telling strangers where you live, where your child goes to school or where you were last night. Most people don’t know the data is there, and apps differ on whether they remove it.
What Hide Location does
It copies the image file without its GPS tags. It uses a lossless copy, so:
- The pixels aren’t re-compressed.
- The format is kept.
- Orientation, colour profile and all other metadata stay.
If a photo has no location, the tool tells you.
Steps
- Open Hide Location and choose a photo.
- Confirm it has location data.
- Tap Save Cleaned to Photos, or keep it in the library.
- Share the cleaned copy.
Be clear about what it covers
- Only location is removed. Camera model, lens and date remain. If that matters, don’t rely on this alone.
- Your original is untouched. It still has its location, so share the new one.
- Visible clues remain. Signs, landmarks and house numbers in the picture reveal location as well.
Opposite job
To add or change a location, see setting a photo’s location.
